PUMA X-Cell Nova FS HYROX Review & Test

Published on 12 February 2026 · By Rox Journey

Introduction

In the demanding world of HYROX, where every second counts and every transition between running and a functional work station is a battle against fatigue, the choice of footwear is not trivial. It's not simply a matter of running fast, but of overall performance: supporting the weight of the sled push, ensuring stability during farmers carries, allowing for explosive propulsion on the rower, and withstanding the repeated impacts of burpees, all while maintaining a high heart rate.

We tested the PUMA X-Cell Nova FS for you, a road running shoe that presents promising technologies like SOFTFOAM+ and ULTRA WEAVING. The objective was clear: determine if this model could move from being a simple running shoe to a reliable partner for HYROX-type functional fitness training and competitions. Are we about to discover a versatile gem or a specialist that's too niche?

Strengths

After several weeks of testing under varied conditions, several qualities of the X-Cell Nova FS clearly stood out.

Immediate and Remarkable Comfort

From the moment you put them on, the comfort is striking. The SOFTFOAM+ insole delivers on its promises, offering generous cushioning, particularly noticeable at the heel. This aspect is crucial for long HYROX training sessions that combine impact and duration. The ULTRA WEAVING fabric upper is supple and hugs the foot well without creating pressure points, contributing to that "slipper" sensation noted by many users.

Appreciable Lightness

The ultra-light construction is a major asset. In a discipline where energy economy is paramount, feeling your shoes as light as feathers during the run, and especially during dynamic movements like burpees or box jumps, is a real plus. It reduces cumulative leg fatigue.

A Secure Fit

The synthetic cage at the midfoot does an excellent job. Once the laces are tightened, it provides an effective lockdown that keeps the foot in place without crushing it. This stability is essential during rapid changes of direction or during load-carrying exercises where the foot must not move inside the shoe.

An Eco-Conscious Commitment

Puma incorporates at least 70% recycled materials in the design of this model. For the athlete conscious of their environmental impact, this is a strong argument that combines performance and a responsible approach.

Weaknesses

No shoe is perfect, and the X-Cell Nova FS show certain limits, especially in the very specific context of HYROX.

Limited Grip on Complex Surfaces

The zoned rubber outsole performs well on road and track. However, as soon as you leave these smooth surfaces, its limits appear. On the sand of the sled pull, on a slightly dusty gym floor, or during farmers carries on grass (outdoors), the grip is not optimal. It lacks bite and versatility for all the potential surfaces encountered in competition.

A Lack of Lateral Rigidity

While the lockdown is good, the shoe as a whole remains very soft and flexible. This is an advantage for running. On the other hand, for powerful lateral movements (like certain sandbag carries) or during the sled push where you push with your whole body and maximum stability is required, one might wish for a more structured and rigid shoe for more direct power transfer.

Upper Durability Under Extreme Conditions

The ULTRA WEAVING fabric is light and breathable, but its long-term resistance to repeated abrasion is a question. Rubbing against rower straps, contact with the ground during burpees, or impacts against weights during transitions could, over time, damage it more quickly than a more technical or reinforced material.

Detailed test from a HYROX perspective

We pushed the PUMA X-Cell Nova FS in simulated HYROX sessions to evaluate their behavior in each typical situation.

Running (1km repeats)

This is clearly their preferred terrain. The SOFTFOAM+ cushioning perfectly absorbs shocks on the road, preserving joints over distance. The lightness is immediately felt, allowing for a sustained pace without a feeling of dragging weights. Breathability is excellent, even during intense intervals. For the "running" part of HYROX, they are very performant.

Rower

Here, the assessment is mixed. The fairly flat and wide sole offers a good contact surface with the footplate, and the lightness is still an asset for the quick return phase. However, the heel lockdown, although correct, is not as firm as on dedicated training shoes. A very slight movement is felt during the most powerful pulls.

Sled Push / Sled Pull

This is where the limits appear the most. For the sled push, the flexibility of the shoe and the lack of rigidity become a handicap. Some of the pushing power transmitted to the ground is lost, and the feeling of stability is not total. For the sled pull, the grip of the sole on a smooth surface (like turf) is just sufficient, but clearly not optimal.

Strength and Movement Stations (Burpees, Farmers Carry, etc.)

  • Burpees: Lightness is king. Getting up quickly is facilitated. The flexibility allows for a good foot roll. The point of caution concerns the wear of the upper at the toes during the push-off.
  • Farmers Carry: Stability is correct thanks to the good fit. The sole, being quite wide, offers a stable base. However, on non-smooth surfaces, the lack of grip can become a risk factor.
  • Medball Throws / Box Jumps: The reactivity is good. The heel cushioning helps with landing jumps, and the shoe allows for quick take-offs.

Transitions and Fatigue

This is a strong point. The permanent comfort and lightness become precious allies towards the end of the race, when fatigue accumulates. The shoe doesn't "weigh" on decisions, it remains pleasant to wear. Quick transitions are facilitated by their ease of putting on and simple design.

Our final opinion

The PUMA X-Cell Nova FS are an excellent surprise as a comfortable, light, and eco-conscious running shoe. For the purely "running" part of a HYROX, and for running training in general, they deserve praise.

However, when evaluating them strictly as a versatile HYROX competition shoe, the verdict is more nuanced. They excel in dynamic and airborne movements (running, jumps, burpees) thanks to their lightness and cushioning. On the other hand, they show weaknesses in ground-based strength stations (sled, farmers carry on unstable terrain) where grip and rigidity are sub-optimal.

For whom?

  • The HYROX athlete looking for a shoe primarily for running sessions and light technical training.
  • The competitor who already uses a dedicated pair for strength stations and is looking for a second, ultra-comfortable pair for the running intervals.
  • The functional fitness enthusiast whose training does not include heavy sled work or extreme push/pull work on slippery surfaces.

Not for whom?

  • The HYROX competitor looking for THE single, versatile, and aggressive pair for all stations.
  • The athlete who prioritizes stability and raw power transmission on push/pull movements.

Conclusion

The PUMA X-Cell Nova FS are very good running shoes that flirt with the world of functional fitness. They bring unmatched comfort and liberating lightness, non-negligible assets over the duration of a competition like HYROX.

However, their lack of versatile grip and structural rigidity on the strength stations prevent them from achieving a perfect score as an all-in-one tool. They represent a specialized and excellent choice for running, but not the universal solution.

If your priority is absolute comfort for running fast and recovering well between efforts, they are an excellent choice. If you need a weapon of war to dominate the sled and farmers carries, you will probably need to turn to more aggressive and structured models.
